My friends and I are in a book club discussing “Ghost Story” by Peter Straub, and we were discussing whether the doorbell would have worked while the power was out as described in the book. Knowing that book was published in 1979 and that there was a Pneumatic Doorbell released in Hong Kong in the mid 1970s really put our minds at ease, as it is possible the character in the novel may have won the Pneumatic Door Chime as a door prize at an insurance convention. Thank you for this!

Yes, it’s possible. It might also have been a more common non-electric mechanical doorbell.
